A summary of news on Greek Fish Farming Industry is extracted from:

FOOD AND AGRICULTURE ORGANIZATION OF THE UNITED NATIONS (extract)

Summary :

Today Greek aquaculture consists mainly of the production of European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) with, in addition, a few freshwater species such as trout, eel and carp (Source: Federation of European Aquaculture Producers – FEAP). In addition there is also some shellfish culture, consisting mainly of mussels, but of comparatively little economic value. Twenty years ago seabass and seabream farming was practically inexistent, however, since 1981 and as a result of the good climatic conditions, the extended and sheltered shoreline, heavy private, national and European investment in the sector and coupled with breakthroughs in hatchery and nutrition technologies, the industry took off and grew 20 fold in the 10 years between 1990 and 2000. Production reached a total of around 103 000 tonnes by 2002 (Stirling Report, 2004) or 57 percent of the global aquaculture production of these species.

Cultured species:

The main fish species farmed today are shown below, in order of importance in terms of tonnage produced:

                Gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata)

                European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax)

           Rainbow trout (Onchorynchus mykiss)

           European eel (Anguilla anguilla)

           Sharpsnout seabream (Diplodus puntazzo)

           Common pandora (Pangelus erythrinus)

           White seabream (Diplodus sargus)

Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thynnus thynnus thynnus)

           Common sole (Solea solea)

           Flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus)

           Common dentex (Dentex dentex)

The first two species make up over 95 percent of the total production in Greece with the rest being produced in very small quantities. The small production of flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) in lagoons, mainly in western Greece, targets mainly at the production of avgotaraxo, or egg-roe preserved in brine, a local delicacy.

There is also a significant production of bivalve mollusc species, mainly mussels and oysters that in 1999 totaled 21 000 tonnes (source Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food) but in value represented less than 3 percent of the total aquaculture production for that year.
